What is Pedodontics

Pedodontics, popularly known as Pediatric Dentistry, is a dentistry treatment method in which routine checks are performed to protect the oral, dental, gum and jaw health of children between the ages of 0 and 14, and diseases such as infection and decay that may occur for different reasons are eliminated.

With pedodontic applications, it is aimed to protect the oral, dental and jaw health of the child from the birth of a baby until the beginning of adolescence, to treat the disorders that may occur for different reasons and to follow the development of teeth.

Dentists who specialize in pedodontic applications and provide services in the field of Pediatric Dentistry are referred to as Pedodontists. Among the treatment methods performed by Pedodontists

  • Routine oral and dental care,
  • Filling applications in deciduous teeth and young teeth,
  • Controlling dietary habits,
  • Dental prosthesis applications in children,
  • Endodontic treatment (Root Canal Treatment and Amputations),
  • Applications to prevent tooth decay, (Fluoride Gel, Fluoride Varnish, Fissure Sealant)
  • Dental trauma in children,

What Conditions Does Pediatric Dentistry Intervene In?

Pedodontics, or more commonly known as Pediatric Dentistry, provides interventions for the treatment of oral, dental, gum and jaw disorders that occur for different reasons in infants, disabled infants, children or disabled children.

Human baby teeth contain much more organic matter compared to other teeth. This situation causes decay of deciduous teeth much faster and easier than other teeth.

The main purpose of all applications within the scope of Pedodontics is to monitor the decaying deciduous teeth very easily and quickly in certain periods and to take early precautions against any discomfort that may occur. However, among the situations intervened with Pediatric Dentistry applications;

  • Preventing possible problems by following the tooth eruption process,
  • Preventing caries formation by keeping milk teeth and permanent teeth under control,
  • Using an appliance in the cavities formed in the mouth when deciduous or permanent teeth are extracted for different reasons,
  • Application of pediatric prostheses in infants born without teeth, which is rare,
  • Maintaining oral and dental health from the time the milk teeth begin to erupt until the permanent teeth appear,

can be shown.

How Pedodontics is Practiced

Oral and dental problems that children are exposed to for different reasons should be treated by dentists who have competence in this field. Pedodontists have strong communication skills with infants, children and parents as they can treat people in childhood or with special conditions.

Within the scope of pedodontic applications, a preliminary examination of the medical and dental status of children is carried out in a clinical environment specially designed for children. After the detection of existing problems, the situation is notified to the parents and a treatment plan is created.

Initial Periodontal Treatment procedure performed within the scope of Pedodontics, i.e. Pediatric Dentistry;

  • Taking intraoral and systemic records,
  • Removal of plaque that causes bacteria formation on the teeth,
  • Informing children and parents about oral hygiene and periodontal diseases,
  • Correction of intraoral fillings,

applications.

After the above-mentioned procedures, the patient's condition is monitored and it is analyzed whether the patient needs further treatment. If necessary, Advanced Periodontal Treatment process is activated and gingival curettage and other surgical procedures are applied.

Bringing the patients who have regained their health as a result of Pedodontics, that is, Pediatric Dentistry applications, to the control at the periods specified by the specialist dentist (every 3 to 6 months on average) prevents the discomfort that may occur in the future.

How often should oral and dental health check-ups be performed in children?
Within the scope of pedodontic applications, even if the ailments experienced by pediatric patients are treated with the correct interventions, the main goal of this procedure is to take the necessary precautions to prevent any oral and dental problems in the child.

The Pedodontics procedure aims to bring the children under the responsibility of parents to the Pediatric Dentists at least once every 6 months to treat the existing disorders and to prevent possible diseases with the measures to be taken.

Thanks to the periodic controls carried out in children, oral and dental problems detected at an early stage are eliminated by the Pediatric Dentistry treatment methods to be applied by the Specialist Dentist before they grow up and the physical and psychological development of children continues in a healthy way.

Why Milk Teeth are Important

The main task of deciduous teeth, of which there are 20 in children, is to ensure that the feeding process takes place in a healthy way and that speech develops correctly.

While milk teeth fulfill the tasks they need to fulfill during childhood, they ensure the protection of oral and dental health in the areas where permanent teeth will erupt in later years. Early loss of deciduous teeth in children causes the permanent teeth to lose their guide in a sense and the retention function in the area where they will erupt decreases.

What are Pedodontic Preventive Applications

The main purpose of Pediatric Dentistry methods is to prevent individuals in childhood from experiencing oral and dental disorders and to ensure that they live a life free from dental caries. All applications performed in this direction are called Pedodontic Preventive Applications.

In order to prevent the emergence of dental caries that children may be exposed to, parents are informed about the wrong behaviors and harmful habits that cause this problem. In addition, Superficial Fluoride and Fissure Sealant methods applied within the scope of Preventive Dentistry in Children are applied to the patient if deemed necessary.

Superficial Fluorine Application

Fluorine is a substance that prevents decay by strengthening the overall structure of the teeth. The lack of the necessary level of tooth enamel in children's teeth makes them more vulnerable to decay.

Thanks to the Superficial Fluorine application performed by dentists specialized in pedodontic applications, teeth are protected against acid attacks and decay. Strengthening the tooth enamel with this application prevents the formation of caries.

In the examinations carried out within the scope of Pediatric Dentistry, children whose tooth enamel is found to be weak should have Superficial Fluorine application every 6 months to prevent tooth decay.

Fissure Sealants

Fissure Sealant is a filling material that prevents contact with bacteria in the mouth by closing the grooves of the tooth areas where the contact with food is the most intense while chewing function is performed in children's permanent teeth.

Within the scope of Pedodontics, this application, which is also performed to prevent tooth decay, should be applied every 6 months like Superficial Fluorine in individuals deemed necessary.

Taking Children to the Dentist

Taking children to the clinic for the first time and meeting the dentist is an important situation that will affect their lives in general. The fact that the child feels peaceful in the clinical environment and trusts the specialist dentist who has received special training in this field ensures the successful progress of the control - treatment process.

As EST Point Oral and Dental Health Center, we ensure that our children are treated with great care by protecting their physical, mental and psychological health by creating a treatment area where they will feel peaceful.

You can make an appointment by contacting us immediately, you can ensure that your child's oral and dental health is protected by having routine checks and that existing problems are treated before they reach advanced stages.

However, while in the past years, the Pedodontics procedure deemed it appropriate to start controls after the milk teeth of the children, today, as a result of Baby Bottle Caries, it is deemed necessary to carry out oral and dental controls from 1 year old infancy.

What is Baby Bottle Rot

Even though many babies today like to sleep with a bottle, this is a wrong practice. Especially bottles - pacifiers soaked in sweet foods such as honey and molasses cause tooth decay in babies.

However, in children who use pacifiers for more than 1 year, Baby Bottle Caries, which starts at a young age and progresses very quickly, is seen especially in the front teeth.

Black Stain Formation on Milk Teeth

Babies or children develop black spots on their milk teeth. These stains may occur due to medication use, but may also be the beginning of decay.

In children with this situation, parents should contact us immediately to make an appointment and have this situation examined by Pediatric Dentists.

If caries is detected, early intervention can save the teeth. In cases without caries, the area is cleaned with the intervention made by the Pedodontist and children are prevented from being psychologically negatively affected.

As soon as the first tooth erupts in children, controls performed within the scope of Pediatric Dentistry should be started. This process should continue to be repeated every 6 months.

Milk teeth begin to erupt between 6 and 8 months after birth. At the end of this process, when the baby reaches the age of 2.5 years, milk teeth take their place, 20 in the upper and lower jaw.

From 0 to 14 years of age, all dental treatment of infants, children or adolescents is carried out by Pediatric Dentistry. In case of an emergency, general dentists will treat cases of this age.
